This is a free chapter for you from my new book “Act Like You Know How to Prophesy: Behind-the-Scenes Practice for Success in Prophetic Ministry”… Enjoy!

You have learned that your confidence begins with the One who sends you. You have explored how the Holy Spirit speaks, kept your yes before Him, and practiced with prophetic words and a vision recorded in Scripture. Now, you are ready to bring that readiness into receiving a prophetic word for someone else.

Before you begin, what do you expect? Do you approach God believing that He wants to speak, or do you already feel that getting a word from Him will be difficult?

I want to share a passage that changed my life and released me in the prophetic years ago:

“How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would be more in number than the sand; When I awake, I am still with You.”

Psalm 139:17–18, NKJV

Have you ever stood on a beach and picked up a handful of sand? Imagine trying to count every grain in your hand. Now think about the whole beach.

This passage helped me see the abundance of God’s thoughts. They are precious, and there are so many of them!

When I began growing in the prophetic, some people questioned how often I prophesied. They would say something like, “Tony, you always have a word. God’s words are precious. We do not think He speaks like that all the time.”

Perhaps they were sincere. That was the understanding they had. But if I had received their view of God, it would have held me back. I might have prophesied only occasionally, waiting for a special event or a particularly strong feeling.

Thank God that He showed me this passage. It changed how I approached Him.

I thought about it this way: even if I prophesied every day, hour after hour, for the rest of my life, I would not scratch the surface of His thoughts. There would still be so much more in Him.

God has thoughts concerning your family, your neighbor, your friend, your city, and your nation. You can receive something from Him and release it, and He still has more.

His generosity does not make His words less precious.

Have there been times when I did not receive a word? Yes. I have experienced that, and I do not pretend to know the reason for every occasion. But those experiences have been rare for me. I do not make them the foundation of my expectation when I come to Him.

I come expecting to receive.

Now, let’s put this into practice. Allow the Holy Spirit to bring someone to your attention. It may be a person you know or someone He highlights as you pray. Bring that person before Him, and keep your yes ready.

Before becoming occupied with what you will say, remember the position you have been practicing. You are available to God. You are willing to serve. You are depending on Him to give you something for this person.

Ask the Holy Spirit for a short prophetic word. Pay attention to how He may speak. You may become aware of a Scripture, a phrase, a picture, or a quiet knowing. Bring what you receive back to the Word of God, as you learned earlier.

Do not feel that you must receive several paragraphs for the word to matter. For this practice, keep it short. Take a piece of paper and write down what you believe the Holy Spirit is giving you.

Read what you have written. Stay with what you believe He gave you.

Now imagine the person in front of you. Practice speaking the short message clearly, with love and confidence. You do not need to make the message complicated. A short word can carry something precious.

This is why I love prophetic ministry. Someone can encounter the goodness of Jesus through what you bring. They may respond, “He told you to tell me that?” Suddenly, they become aware that the Lord sees them and cares about their life.

Sometimes that expression of His heart may include an action. He may prompt you to give something or help someone in a practical way. For example, the Lord may lead you to give someone a specific amount of money as a prophetic act. That person may respond, “Wow, He told you to give me this?” You are giving them an opportunity to taste His goodness and discover how personally He cares for them.

You have begun practicing with a person in mind. Now imagine that the person before you is a president or another leader of a nation. Would their position change your confidence in the One who sent you? In the next chapter, we will bring this practice into that setting.

God Bless You
