Commanders
Whether you realize it or not, you are a commander.
What is a commander? It is a person of authority who is entrusted with power and can exercise that authority over any situation or circumstance. Whether you realize it or not, if you are a born-again Christian, you are a commander.
All born‑again believers are empowered by Christ and carry His authority over the enemy in their spirit—though some may doubt it, Luke 10:19 clearly states that He gave us that authority.
Throughout history there have been countless commanders—some good, some bad, some famous, and many unknown. Yet for the past two hundred years or so the church has largely been absent from that list because of that doubt which breeds unbelief.
Jesus gave us permission to use His authority in His name shortly after He was resurrected. He said we could do the works He did and even more. John tells us that He performed so many deeds that no book could contain them all. Here are just a few:
* Acts 10:38 records that He went about doing good, healing, and delivering all who were oppressed by Satan.
* Luke 4:35 illustrates Him speaking with authority healing a man possessed by an unclean spirit.
* Mark 9:25 records Jesus commanding an evil spirit to cease its work, leave and never return.
Jesus delegated this same authority to His followers in Luke 10:19, and by spiritual birthright, to us, His modern-day believers, when we align with God’s purposes. We often overlook verses that make it clear that born‑again believers are meant to be commanders.
We should emulate Paul, who, though not present at the meeting in Luke 10, believed and did not hesitate to exercise that authority. In Acts 16:18 he rebuked and dismissed the spirit of divination from a slave girl. Acts 14:8-10, he healed a man lame from birth. In Acts 13:6-12 he neutralized the threat of a sorcerer. In Acts 20:7-12 he restored life to a dead man. Jesus said that we can do the same types of works in his name.
Job 22:28 says, “Decree a thing, and it will be established for you; and light (which is God’s favor) shall shine on all your ways.” Even Old Testament saints who believed, in faith, could decree some things. How much more New Testament believers who have Jesus’ authorization?
Romans 4:17 records Paul’s declaration that God calls things that are not as if they were. When we exercise the same faith Abraham displayed, we can also speak God’s life into any situation.
Problems often arise in our society when a person who is not a born‑again Christian—or is a shallow believer—who, without realizing it, may command the devil’s will instead of the Lord’s. It is our job, purpose, and duty to command the Lord’s will on earth as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10)
Jesus gave us the authority and ability to command the devil’s evil intents be null and void, thus allowing Gods will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Jesus commanded us to go into all the world as commanders: to save, to heal, to deliver, to make disciples, and even to raise the dead, thereby wrecking Satan’s plans for humanity. But that mandate is largely ignored because we don’t realize that we actually can do as He commanded. If you are a born-again Christian, you were reborn a new creation who by design is automatically, a commander.
Commanders command. We need to begin to expand God’s kingdom on earth by commanding evil to leave our lives, our neighborhoods, our cities and state, our nations, our culture, even our planet. That is our mission. We must begin to fulfill it.
