Key Verse: John 12:24

(I tell you the truth, unless a Kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies … NIV)

Over times, I have come to realize definite truths about a seed. That’s why I decide to take us on this journey of what I called a “Must Do” as a seed. A seed simplified is any structure with the reproductive ability. Gen. 1: 26–28, was an account of how God engineered the idea to create man in his own image and likeness. One key observation from this place is that, it proves the very point that God is a seed. Since he can be able to reproduce. A seed can be in primary form or in secondary form: the primary form is when it is limited to only reproduction, while the secondary form is when it can create another thing other than itself.

The good thing about the nature of God as a seed is that he operates in this dual form. The secondary aspect of him is demonstrated in his ability to create other things, while the primary aspect is in his ability to make us in his image and likeness. Let’s be sensitive of the word image and likeness. What this mean is that the duality form of God is in us because we are the very replica of God. So, if he can reproduce himself, we too, and if he can create other things, we too. This he made us to understand in Gen.1.28 – God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” NIV. Increase in number which indicates Reproduction, and he went further to tell us to fill while some translations will say replenish. Replenishment is quiet different from reproduction. In replenishment, everything that need to make the earth complete are there 2peter 1:3. This was what God was demonstrating when after creating all that he created, he gave them to Adam to look after it. A seed can be a person, dream, purpose, or calling.

How we demonstrate our ability to produce other things as a seed is captured in what is called “Seed Faith”. Seed faith is the ability to lay hold on what we have in other to get what we don’t have. That we don’t have a job now, and we lay hold that we have our certificate and cv, hence we must have job irrespective of not having someone. This is indeed what we as believers operates on.

It is also important to know that as beautiful it may sound of our seed nature and the ability we have as seeds, the Feature of a seed is in it’s plantation. What is plantation? Plantation is the process of deliberate positioning and surrender. The key verse pointed out this in the statement “falls to the ground and die”. This means that two things must happen to a seed for it to bring forth: to fall down and death. Here to fall down is captured in deliberate positioning. We position ourselves as believers in Christ Jesus. John 15:4–5 (KJV): “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.” As the crops can’t do without the ground, so as we as humans can’t do without Jesus. Death on the other hand is captured in total surrender 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV): “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” Why this is important is that increase can only come from God Almighty (1 Cor. 3:6–7).

Characteristics of a seed that must be planted

  1. Potential – A seed holds unseen greatness that can only be realized when planted. Note that from 2peter 1:3, we have everything in us as a seed. What we need is to start bringing forth, which is a portal that can only be unlocked only by plantation.
  2. Death to self – Planting requires letting go of personal pride, comfort, and visibility. Total surrender from all that withheld us (Luke 9:23).
  3. Buried in the dark – Sometimes we must go through hidden seasons (obscurity) to grow. Why this is important is because, when God starts making us, it doesn’t make sense in the eyes of men. It can only make sense during harvest (1 cor. 2:14).
  4. Watered by the word – Growth comes through exposure to the word, prayer, and godly fellowship. (Josh 15:8, Luke 8:15 NIV)
  5. Growth is gradual – Just like Crops when planted, it’s unexplainable how the grow. It’s gradual, don’t be too hasty. Patience is the key (James 5:7)
  6. Roots before fruits – True success starts beneath the surface — building strength, character, and faith (Luke 14:28). This is exactly what happens to seeds when planted, the root goes down first before coming up (mark 4:28). This is very necessary because the root will help to withstand anything that may be encountered in the process.

How to plant yourself

  1. Submit to God’s will – (Romans 12:1–2)
  2. Stay in a local church (Spiritual environment) – (Psalm 92: 13-14, Hebrews 10:25)
  3. Serve faithfully – (Mark 10:43–45, Matthew 25:21)
  4. Stay hidden and obedient (Trust God’s timing) – (Isaiah 49:2, Eccl 3:1, Luke 2:52)
  5. Feed on the Word – (Psalm 1:2–3, Matthew 4:4)

Signs that we are not yet planted

  1. Consistent shifting churches, calling, or relationships. (Proverbs 24:21, James 1:6–8)
  2. Avoiding accountability and discipline – (Hebrews 12:6, Proverbs 12:1)
  3. Lack of commitment to service or spiritual growth – A seed that cannot stay in the ground cannot grow and serve its purpose. (Luke 9:62, Galatians 6:9)
  4. Living for applause, not for purpose – (Matthew 6:1, Galatians 1:10)
  5. Shallow roots – Easily offended and disconnected; not being able to withstand trials as they come through leadership. (Matthew 13:20–21)
