Pride, Knowledge, Eve’s Discontentment, A spouse’s peace and The Dragon

Pride purports to know all but does not know peace.

The desire to have knowledge of ALL things is rooted in pride. Many people desire knowledge for personal gain such as self-promotion, self-acceptance, societal approval, to build a hierarchy on the bricks of superlative knowledge and to worship a golden calf of gnosis, often resembling themselves or to laude over others. Knowledge can also be used as a refuge from shame; the shame of confessing or admitting to ignorance. My question is “Must we know everything?”  “Must we acquire the knowledge we hunger for to excessive levels, in all areas of interest, every time we desire it?”

Yes, learning is a fundamental part of life, I am not in the least bit coming against having an education and an ambition to discover and be edified. By design, we are beings created by God’s intelligence and we are meant to also share and operate in intelligence.

I guess a truer reflection of what I am asking in hopes of inspiring self-examination, conviction and repentance is as follows:

1.” When does gaining knowledge become an ugly issue of insecurity?”

2.” When does Knowledge become a form of idolatry, pride, faithlessness (a measure of infidelity to God) and lust (an insatiable discontentment)?”

3. Why does shame have to be attributed to a lack of knowledge, when we can turn to the father for all wisdom and knowledge, and ask for it? He promises to richly or abundantly give.

Shame comes only when we do not ask the father for the knowledge we need and instead face the consequences of its absence. Other than that, there should not be any shame attached to not knowing especially when we turn to the father who gives it generously. Scripture says, “It is the Glory of God to conceal a matter and the honour of kings to search it out.”

The voice of shame speaks to the one who chooses to stay in a form of ignorance that God never mandated. Shame is also reserved for the one who turns to themselves and pursues a limited or corrupted knowledge. The end will always be shame. But knowledge acquired from the Spirit of Knowledge (A dimension of one of God’s seven spirits) will always give more than just the knowledge. The spirit of God will also provide the peace, the humility, the context, the vision, the mode of operation and the people group it is to be shared with. It will produce a good harvest, a good and glorious return.

4. Could we be dissatisfied with God’s abundance? Do we think of God’s abundance together with a measure of limitation, as a form of injustice and inadequacy? Why are we not content with what God chooses to give or reveal and chooses to withhold or limit? Is it that we do not trust His judgment of what we can receive? Are we not trusting that Love protects and sees the agenda and ambitions of the acquirer of knowledge and the power the knowledge can bring.

It is my belief and observation that everything we receive from God requires a measure of capacity and stewardship from us. Knowledge isn’t simply about knowing. It is like a seed that must be sown and must bring a return. There is call for responsibility, stewardship and accountability with the things we learn. It is wise that we ask God what we ought to know, rather than to set off on a determined pursuit without His guidance or accompaniment.

I think the shame of not knowing chides us and says: “There is a lack.” It is debatable that this may be for our benefit or defeat. It matters only where it has its origins. Is it from the voice of God that desires to redeem and instill wisdom? Or is it from the accuser that desires to ridicule persecute and accuse? Not every harsh remark is a lie, but truth that does not come from the mouth of love will never hold redemption. The lack will never be filled because condemnation revealed it. Be wary of those who speak into your ear and more so when the voice arises from your favoured counterparts and loved ones.

Humility on the other hand receives the counsel of the Lord. This ties back to the original sin of Eve. Eve ate from the tree of KNOWLEDGE of good and evil. She was not content with the knowledge that her father nor her spouse shared with her. Eve had a perceived lack, this seed of lack was sown into her, via the conversation with the serpent. A seed of insecurity disguised as a need, “the need to become like God (all knowing like God) because she perceived she was not.”  In a sense, it is true that she did not possess a form of knowledge, but the deception was that her not knowing good and evil, was a form lack that limited her in a negative way. The truth is, only God can judge what is lack in our lives and if it is to our benefit or detriment.

The subtle issue here is that Eve was already like God. She bore a likeness that was a result of being made in His image. To see Eve or even Adam for that matter would be as if to see a reflection of their creator. The issue wasn’t just even bearing a likeness. What was sold to her through deception was to become God. To become her own god. WE ARE NOT CALLLED TO BECOME gods. We are called to be Sons of God and bear His likeness and have dominion on earth in the authority delegated to us!

When did this become insufficient?

It started back in the Garden of Eden.

Eve was not content with there being reserved knowledge for God contingent on His good judgment of either dispensing or withholding it. She lacked humility in her domain.

My question:

Why didn’t Eve seek Abba on what she felt she lacked? Instead, she sought to obtain it for herself. Did she feel some form of insufficiency that drove her to feed herself from what God warned against and banned!?

Humility acknowledges what it does not know and in so doing, gains companionship with the Spirits of the Living God who shares generously what we have need of. To have companionship with God, brings true peace because we can rest without having knowledge of all things. We can rest from not being yoked to matters or people, thoughts, agendas and responsibilities that came from a particular form of knowledge. There are many things, circumstances, priorities, distractions and weights that wrong knowing can bring into a person’s life.

A prime example of this can be observed in marriage, from as early on as the marriage bed, where one comes to “know” their spouses. That knowledge in all of its full measure, beyond physical intimacy, unfurls responsibilities quickly.

Knowing doesn’t always add to your peace unless God leads in the acquiescence of such knowledge. There are a multitude of people that can attest to the issues that arose because they acquired wrong knowledge or knowledge of the wrong partner!

Knowledge of something or someone, must be partnered with understanding and Wisdom’s teachings, which often calls us to leadership roles. Leadership requires endurance, character, discipline, tenacity and patience, to say the least.

Pride, on the other hand, often claims to know everything but often fails to build, lead, rest or inhabit peace, when it is called to fill the duties and responsibilities of having “all the knowledge.” Because pride is a stranger to peace, i.e. it lacks companionship with God, Pride (the one who is prideful) is left to bear the weight of knowing all. This is a breeding ground for impatience, disagreement, lack of support or help, short sightedness towards the need for delegation or community.

There is no humility accompanying pride, only a perpetual self-reliance. Self-reliance will always be insufficient to bear burdens because “self” is the human nature with its physical limitations and blind spots.

I love the personification of pride in this quote “Pride Knows all but is quite the stranger to Peace.” It reminds me that Leviathan is in fact a prideful principality. It is a guardian in the watch post over pride and honour and dishonour.

I saw a vision of a dragon breathing fire whilst writing this article, which is a perfect depiction of pride. The fire it breathes outwardly is the action of boasting. It leaves destruction in its path. Anyone that tries to contend will be slain, only the humble who step aside avoid the certain flame. Pride leaves behind mayhem and no peace. In fact, pride can lead to loneliness, resentment, regret to list a few negatives, because it tears down any in its path, if it turns around to see the results of its fire breathing, all that is left behind is rubble and ash.

Peace brings community, friendship and relationship. It fosters invitation and welcome, pride tears down and leads to devastating dysfunction and mayhem. Pride does not hold nor give forgiveness. An unforgiving soul will hold the thorns of bitterness and anger, which are mutilating spirits that cannot and will not know community nor relationship.  In order to have community and relationship, a healthy one at least, there must be agreement in the Spirit of Peace.
