Landing Strips: The Missing Piece in Your Fight for Spiritual Breakthrough
In our daily walk with God, we often face challenges, trials, and spiritual battles. Many times, we blame circumstances, people, or even external forces for our struggles. While it’s true that we can be wronged by others and situations can arise beyond our control, there is a deeper spiritual principle that we must understand: taking responsibility and closing the landing strips in our lives.
From the very beginning, humanity has struggled with taking responsibility. When Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden, he shifted blame to Eve, and Eve blamed the serpent (Genesis 3:12-13). This pattern of avoiding accountability continues today. However, God desires that we take ownership of our good and bad actions. Acknowledging our role in situations brings clarity, healing, and spiritual authority over the enemy.
Understanding the Concept of a Landing Strip
A crucial yet often overlooked biblical principle is the concept of landing strips—the areas in our hearts and lives where the enemy finds a foothold. Proverbs 26:2 states that a curse does not come without a cause. This means that for any demonic attack or spiritual oppression to take hold, there must be an open door—something in us that gives the enemy access.
Jesus demonstrated this principle in John 14:30, where He declared that the enemy had no claim over Him. This statement signifies that Jesus had no landing strip for Satan to exploit. As believers, we must strive for the same spiritual purity.
The Enemy Seeks a Landing Strip
Spiritual attacks do not happen randomly. The enemy looks for a place to land, and if he finds a suitable environment, he establishes a stronghold. This can manifest in different ways:
- Unforgiveness and Bitterness – These create an entry point for oppression (Ephesians 4:26-27).
- Pride – This is a major doorway to deception (Proverbs 16:18).
- Fear and Anxiety – These weaken our spiritual defenses (2 Timothy 1:7).
- Sin and Compromise – Living outside of God’s will invites darkness (Romans 6:16).
Just as Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:3) allowed Satan to fill their hearts through deceit, we too can unintentionally permit the enemy to operate when we harbor sin.
The Holy Spirit Seeks a Landing Strip Too
While the enemy seeks a place to land, so does the Holy Spirit. When we cultivate a heart of purity, prayer, worship, and obedience, we create a landing strip for the divine presence. The apostles in Acts 2 prayed for ten days, preparing themselves for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Their hunger for God was their landing strip!
If we want more of God’s power, we must create an atmosphere that welcomes Him. This includes:
- Walking in holiness and humility
- Practicing love and forgiveness
- Maintaining a prayerful lifestyle
- Engaging in acts of generosity and kindness
Before rebuking the enemy, we must first examine our hearts. Ask the Lord to reveal any area that might be a landing strip for darkness. David exemplified this heart posture in Psalm 51, where he repented deeply before God after his sin with Bathsheba.
Consider this analogy: A kitchen table with crumbs attracts ants, but a table with rotting food attracts rats. The longer sin lingers, the greater the infestation. Small compromises may lead to larger spiritual consequences. That’s why we must be quick to repent and diligent in maintaining purity.
Spiritual Warfare and Discernment
Engaging in spiritual warfare without addressing underlying issues is like chasing birds while keeping an open nest. You can cast out demons, but if you don’t remove the landing strip, they will return (Luke 11:24-26).
To effectively combat spiritual attacks, follow these steps:
- Examine your heart – Ask the Holy Spirit to expose hidden sins or strongholds.
- Repent and renounce – Turn away from any compromise and declare freedom in Christ.
- Walk in obedience – Align your lifestyle with God’s word.
- Stay filled with the Holy Spirit – Maintain a spiritual atmosphere that repels darkness.
The Importance of Holiness in Every Area
Even our appearance, words, and actions can become landing strips. Dressing seductively, engaging in gossip, or entertaining ungodly conversations can open doors to spiritual attacks. We must be intentional about how we live, speak, and present ourselves.
The enemy is actively seeking those he can devour (1 Peter 5:8), but we have the power to shut every door. Ask yourself:
- What are the landing strips in my heart?
- Am I giving the enemy access through pride, bitterness, or compromise?
- How can I make my heart a landing strip for the Holy Spirit?
The coming outpouring of the Holy Spirit is immense. Position yourself through holiness, prayer, and obedience so that you can be a vessel for God’s power. The apostles prepared themselves for Pentecost—will you do the same?
